Nigeria

Nigeria is a country divided. Islam dominates the north, where Boko Haram have terrorised Christians for years, including an attack in 2018 which left 106 people dead. The south is predominantly Christian. Twelve states in northern Nigeria enforce Sharia (Islamic) Law.

In the north, Christians are pressured to not wear a cross or carry a Bible. Some even dress like Muslims to avoid persecution. Qualified Christians are often denied employment and some are asked to give up their faith if they want a job.

Christian homes and churches have been destroyed. Attacks from the Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram, and clashes between Muslim Fulani Herdsmen and Christian farmers have left many dead. Nigeria is one of the most violent countries for Christians in the world and accounts for 90% of Christian deaths in the 2019 World Watch List reporting period.

Story

“You responded to our cry... You have brought food items and toiletries for us. We are indeed grateful.” – Mary from Nigeria.

An attack by Fulani Herdsmen claimed the lives of over 200 Christians, and left 3,000 displaced. Open Doors’ local partners provided displaced Christians with food, oil and toiletries.

Our Work

Open Doors partners with the local church to strengthen persecuted Christians in Nigeria. We prepare the church for persecution, provide emergency relief, trauma counselling and access to basic services like education, medical care and clean water.

Pray for Nigeria

Pray Christians in Nigeria can be bold in sharing their faith, even with those who persecute them.

Pray many Islamic extremists and Fulani Herdsmen receive the gospel.

Pray for families who have lost everything for their faith in Jesus. Ask God to provide for them and provide ways for them to earn a living.
