|Sources of Persecution||Islamic Oppression|
|Leader||President Filipe Nyusi|
Islamic extremism and organised crime are the main drivers of persecution in Mozambique. Christians face extreme violence, particularly in the country’s north, and tens of thousands have been forced to flee their homes.
What Does Persecution Look Like?
Extremists have looted and destroyed many Christian places of worship, Christian schools and Christian-owned businesses. Aid workers have also been targeted.
In April 2020, an Islamic extremist group with possible ties to the Islamic State attacked several villages, burning many down churches. 52 people died.
Who Is Most Vulnerable To Persecution?
Those who leave Islam to follow Jesus are particularly vulnerable. If their faith is discovered, they can be forced into marriage with a non-Christian, forbidden from any church activities and even be subjected to violence for their faith.
Pray for the physical, emotional and spiritual healing of those affected by extremism and violence.
Pray for God to transform the nation’s extremists. Pray they will come to know and love Jesus.
Pray church leaders will be equipped with the courage to faithfully guide their congregations through persecution.
