Pakistan | Waiting For A Verdict For Nearly 10 Years – Asia Bibi
The final appeal was heard on 8 October by the Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding the decade-long Asia Bibi blasphemy case.
Now the world waits for the verdict that will determine her freedom or her death. The announcement date of the verdict outcome has not been made public yet.
Please pray with Asia Bibi and her family as she waits on death row for a verdict. Pray that they trust that God is in control and have hope in the freedom found in Jesus.
Asia Bibi’s Story
Aasiya Noreen “Asia” Bibi is a mother-of-five from Ittan Wali, a small rural village in central Pakistan.
There was open hostility towards her from the women she worked with because she is part of the country’s Christian minority, which makes up less than 2% of Pakistan.
In June 2009, whilst working on a field picking berries she went to get a drink that would dramatically change her life. Whilst getting water from the well, some Muslim women tried to chase her away, claiming that she would make the water ‘unclean’ if she used it.
Asia reportedly replied saying Jesus had rescued her and then asked, “What did your Prophet Mohammed ever do to save mankind?” For this simple question, she was sentenced to death for blasphemy in 2010 and has been in prison ever since.

Asia was the first woman to be sentenced to death for blasphemy in Pakistan, according to human rights groups.
Over the years, her drawn-out case has seen global attention. Her defence has made many appeals for her freedom.
Asia says, “Every time my cell door opens my heart beats faster. My life is in God’s hands and I don’t know what’s going to happen to me… I’m starting to wonder whether being a Christian in Pakistan today is not just a failing or a mark against you, but actually a crime.”
Freedom Will Come With A Cost
If Asia Bibi is granted freedom, her future remains unsure. Many groups in Pakistan have rallied for a death penalty verdict, to the point where threats have been made to the officials that will determine the case.
It’s unclear whether Asia Bibi and her family would be able to leave the country for their safety.
- Pray for Asia Bibi, that her faith in Jesus remains strong through this trail.
- Pray for her family, that they will be comforted in this time and will trust God, no matter the outcome.
- Pray with Christians in Pakistan, and around the world that suffer for His glory.
