The devastating earthquake and tsunami have claimed the lives of over 2,000 people and more than 70,000 people have been forced from their homes to temporary shelters. Open Doors is working to support the church in affected areas.

The natural disasters hit the island of Sulawesi on Friday 28 September. Sulawesi is a majority Muslim island, with a Christian population of around 20%.

One of our local church partners affected by the earthquake said, “We have tried to go everywhere for help but [there is] none available."

Open Doors field workers have been on the ground, assessing the needs and working with local partners to provide aid relief.

We have distributed food packages, tents, blankets and mats to 9 churches in Kulawi mountainous area, approximately 50 kilometres from Palu. Each church consists of around 50 to 70 families.

The Church Needs Your Prayers

It’s reported that a church in central Sulawesi had been hit by a landslide.

“A total of 34 bodies were found by the team,” said an Indonesia Red Cross spokeswoman, adding that 86 students had initially been reported missing from a Bible camp at the Jonooge Church Training Centre.

The United Nations estimates that there are 191,000 people in urgent need of help after the quake-tsunami, among them 46,000 children and 14,000 elderly – many in areas that are not the focus of government recovery efforts.
