The constitution guarantees freedom of religion; however, leaving Islam is prohibited and 'public proselytism' of Muslims is against government policy. Pressure has increased on foreign Christians, with some pastors being deported for 'illegal' missionary activities. Many Muslims who become Christians maintain a low profile in order to avoid harassment. In the past, family members have filed charges against them in Islamic law courts, leading to the loss of custody of children, annulment of their marriage contracts and depriving them of other civil rights. They face discrimination and the threat of mental and physical abuse by their families, government officials, and sometimes community members.

Examples of Persecution:

  • In April 2008 one had his marriage annulled by a Shariah court because of his conversion.
  • Two Christians were reported to have been physically harmed or strictly limited in their freedom because of their faith

Please Pray:

  • For courage and strength for those facing charges of apostasy
  • For wisdom and perseverance for expatriate Christians seeking to share their faith with Muslims
  • That God would soften the hearts of those in government towards His people. Pray for increased freedom to worship.
